University of Victoria Students’ Society Military Ban
I always enjoy any news article that contains the words “impeachment petitions were circulated.”
The Martlet has a great article about the University of Victoria Students’ Society, whose Board of Directors voted to ban military recruiters from the University in a 7-6 count. The UVSS have since rescinded their decision, and instead it will be put to a vote at the Annual General Meeting on October 25th.
There’s different ways you can look at this. You can see the military recruiters as simply showcasing a job opportunity, in the same way that any other organizations do for job fairs. However, you could also interpret their presence as an endorsement of war crimes or colonization practices in Afghanistan. One way or the other, it will all come to a head on October 25. It’s always good to see students passionate about an event happening at their University, even if it is from the result of an unpopular decision.

The Current Security Situation at UW
For those interested, the security situation at the University of Winnipeg is being updated more regularly on their website. Also of interest is the University of Winnipeg Security blog, which has been around since late 2004. It hasn’t been updated over the last month, but nonetheless it is interesting to look at. I had no idea that this blog even existed, and I’m sure more students would be interested to hear that it exists.
More information about the current security situation can be found after the jump.
David EisBrenner on the Task Force on Access
Here’s an article David EisBrenner wrote for The Uniter on September 20. It deals with the University of Winnipeg’s Task Force on Access, which examines the accessibility of post-secondary education.

Joey Coleman, one of Canada’s top student bloggers, gave us a shoutout today on his Macleans blog. It’s a great compliment to be told you have “really good information broadcasted.” For those of you haven’t seen Coleman’s blog, check out his Macleans blog for one of the most comprehensive resources for current student news.
An Appropriate Quote, Given the Circumstances
“He who sacrifices liberty for security deserves neither” is a quote often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but it only appeared in a book he happened to publish, so it may not have been his quote after all. Regardless, it is a thought that is relevant on campus this week. I’m not necessarily saying I think it’s a correct statement, but I’m not saying it’s altogether wrong either. It’s definitely worth discussion, however.

In this episode we have a round table discussion with prominent students on campus including Matthew Molnar, Kent Davies and Shelagh Pizey-Allen. Here are some pictures of the campus on Wednesday, the day that the attack was supposed to happen, and also some pictures during the discussions in the studio. Click for larger images.
