By-Elections 07

Voting opened today for the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association by-elections. I highly suggest that everyone at UWinnipeg head out to vote. It’s like in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451; the government didn’t take away people’s right to read – they forfeited their right because they thought reading was stupid.

Don’t think that voting is stupid. Vote – it’s much less painful than a rabies vaccination.

And if you don’t vote, VPI Scott Nosaty will go on a power-hungry spree throughout the Bulman Centre. And no one needs that.

006 – Wherein Candidates Expound

There’s nothing more exciting than by-election season. Well, maybe general election season. Or Federal election season. Okay, there’s lots of things more exciting than by-election season. Even though there are no contested positions in this year’s University of Winnipeg Students’ Association by-election, there are still a lot of people running; there are, for example, two different co-directorships.

We were fortunate to have on one person from a co-directorship, Sean McMullen, who along with Stephen Milner is running for the Director of Student Living position. Jonathan Niemczak appeared in studio as well, and he is running for the position of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and * Director. For those would-be directors who couldn’t make it, we have the candidate speeches which were delivered on Monday, October 22nd.

In addition, you can also view the candidate’s profiles which appeared in this week’s edition of the Uniter.

UWSA By-Election 07 Candidates

The UWSA By-Election candidates have been announced! The official list is:

  • Margaux Miller (Recreation and Athletics Co-Director)
  • Steve Milner and Sean McMullen (Co-Directors of Student Living)
  • Jonathan Niemczak (LGBT and * Director)
  • André Tardiff and Chelsea Duszak (Science Co-Directors)

Nobody in running for the position of Education Director or Status of Women Director, so they will remain vacant until the general election next spring.

The candidate speeches took place yesterday, and public debates will be taking place on Monday, October 29 at 12:30pm in room 1L04. Show up with your lunch and have a look at what the candidates have to say.

We’ll also be having most of the candidates on The Fishbowl for a chat on Wednesday, October 24, so tune in for a very special election episode. That’s episode 006, if you’re counting.

UPDATE: The public debates have been cancelled, as non of the positions are contested.

005 – Make Love, Not Decisions

This was a particularly exciting episode. First of all, it’s an exciting issue – the banning of military recruiters at the University of Victoria. Secondly, we talked to Tracy Ho, who gave us the inside look on the issue from the perspective of being Chair of the UVSS. Thirdly, we were lucky enough to have David Karp, Editor-in-Chief of The Martlet speak to us to give us the perspective of the UVSS from the point of view of students. And Facebook. And was Christine Comrie taken out of context? You decide.

After the jump you can find a whole series of letters to the editor that were printed in the Martlet about the military ban.

Huzzah, Downloads!

Just so everyone knows, you can now officially download every episode of the show WITHOUT that wretched yousendit. Just click the link to the right to find the episode you want. Then right-click the link and select “save as.” Then you’re ready to rock and/or roll!

Episode 4 – Who Are You?

Sorry for the delay, chums! But at long last, the fabled fourth instalment is up and running!

We were curious about how much students actually knew about their student organization, the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA). Low voter turnout recently suggests that people weren’t terribly aware of the UWSA, so we spoke to random students around the university to see how much they did know about the organization – and what suggestions they had.

We were also fortunate enough to have UWSA Vice-President Internal Scott Nosaty join us live to react to the comments made by the students. Fun times!

You can download the episode right here!

Or, you can listen to it right here on the site by clicking the fancy play button below:

Coming up Next Week…

It’s certainly been exciting times at UVic, and that’s exactly why we’ll be talking to them on Wednesday the 17th on the Fishbowl.

We’ll be speaking with Tracy Ho, Chairperson of the Board for the University of Victoria Students’ Society. As well, we’ll be talking to David Karp, Editor-in-Chief of The Martlet, UVic’s student newspaper.

Tune in Wednesday!

UWSA By-Election 07

It’s by-election season at the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association!

This year there are six positions available for election:

Director of Student Living
Education Director
Recreation and Athletics Director
Science Director
Status of Women Director
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgendered and * Students’ Director.

I strongly suggest that anyone interested in becoming involved with the UWSA take the opportunity to run for one of these positions. If you require more information, feel free to email the Chief Elections Commisioner, Maria Laureano, at uwsacec@uwinnipeg.ca

The Fishbowl will likely be having debates and/or speeches on-air when the names of who is running are finalized.

Episode 003 – Updated

Alright, the link for the download to the show actually works now. It’s still yousendit.com, but that will be remedied…soon. Hopefully. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Episode 003 – Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Abe Snobar

In this installment we talk to Abe Snobar, Vice President of Student Life and Events from Ryerson Students’ Union. Our discussion dealt primarily with the motion that Abe presented which wanted to see Ryerson defederate from the Canadian Federation of Students, the largest student organization in Canada.

We would like to note that we offered the opportunity to appear on our show to Ryerson Students’ Union President Nora Loreto. She opposed Mr. Snobar’s motion to leave the CFS. However, she did not respond to our requests.

Download it here.

And please bear with us over the next few days. We are switching to a new place to host our files, so some of them might be temporarily unavailable. This problem should be fixed soon, but feel free to email us and tell us to work faster by emailing fishbowlshow@gmail.com
